If you are working with power tools and you cut off a finger you still have nine others. The loss of one finger or even one finger on each hand will not stop you from being able to anything you can do with the finger, but it may take the brain some time to learn how to work with the missing appendage. The loss of one eye can be devastating. Without the use of both eyes we lose our depth perception which would affect many aspects of our lives, including driving and even simple tasks like walking up and down stairs.

It does not matter if you use tools for a living or if you just like to be handy around the house on the weekend, if you are using a power toll you MUST remember to put on your safety glasses. As a former welder, I was constantly using tools that produce either bright light or dangerous shards of metal that could severely damage your eyes.

Welding is the process of using fire or electricity to melt two pieces of metal and turn them into one piece and this process produces a large amount of light so strong that to look at it with unprotected eyes will cause the cornea to blister just like your skin would after over exposure to the sun. This makes the eye feel as if a handful of sand has been rubbed into the eye and it becomes more irritated every time you blink. That is why welders will use a mask with a very dark lens. The welding masks are designed to be able to accommodate someone who wears prescription glasses since it would be rather difficult to make prescription lenses for the welding masks.

When using tools like drills and power saws it is just as important to wear safety eyeglasses and not just regular eyeglasses with scratch resistant lenses because regular glasses do not have protective coverage on the sides or the top and bottom of them, and believe me-you do not want to have to go to the hospital because you have a splinter in your eye.

If this does ever occur the process for removing a splinter from your eye is a very uncomfortable one because the doctors need to go into the eye with a needle to help push out the shards of foreign material, and although they can numb the eye, your eyes need to be open and you can see the entire procedure and it can be very unsettling.

Although there are very few safety glasses that accept prescription lenses on the market today, there is a wide selection of safety goggles that are designed to be worn with eyeglasses underneath them. You may think that protective glasses are not cool and that the other guys may laugh at you, but when you are visiting them in the hospital and they have a bandage over one of their eyes, believe me you will be very grateful that you had the smarts to ignore them and protect your eyes.
