Food is very much vital in the human life. For every single piece of food that we take in, it has its own purpose. In a way, it also gives us the nutrients that our body greatly needs. But aside from food, we also need certain enzymes for the food to be completely digested. Before you scrunch up your face in utter confusion of what the heck enzymes are, you should know the basics.
Enzymes are proteins that catalyze big food particles. When you say catalyze, it means breakdown of the food particles. When you eat, how you munch and chew on the food is not enough for it to be totally absorbed by your body. It needs the special participation of what are called the enzymes to act on these food particles. These enzymes will then initiate what you call the enzymatic reactions, thus the start of the many complex processes of food breakdown.
There are many enzymes and they all have their respective actions. One of theses is the lactase enzyme. This is the one responsible for digesting the substance lactose which is found in milk. The person who lacks or whose lactase enzymes are not sufficient will suffer the condition commonly known as the lactose intolerance.
Lactose intolerance is a medical condition wherein there is a deficiency of the lactase enzyme. If lactase, the enzyme necessary for the breakdown of lactose in the small bowel, is inadequate, large lactose molecules will draw fluid into the small bowel resulting in abdominal cramping, diarrhea, and flatulence. Eliminating milk from diet or taking a lactase replacement such as the lactaid, lactase, or surelac, before eating dairy products would surely eliminate the manifestations of lactose intolerance. Also, lactose-free milk and ice-cream products are also available so that people can still eat them without suffering the unwanted effects of being lactose intolerant.
Lactose intolerance is also very common in infants. When the young ones suffer from this condition, they are really very pitiful and absolute monitoring should really be imposed. One of the cardinal symptoms of lactose intolerance is diarrhea and this is the exact reason why these newborns should really be watched out for. They will be very prone to dehydration which puts them into greater risk since dehydration in children is really fatal and should not be taken for granted. Babies tend to be very fragile therefore they are more at risk with acquiring these diseases. Their normal flora is less defensive when it comes to this condition, which is why great care should be rendered to them.
For these conditions and for all the other conditions which resulted from deficiencies, vigilance and caution must really be implemented so as to avoid the unwanted signs and symptoms. These symptoms are very hassling and they would drain you physically and financially if the condition would worsen overtime. So before this would happen, keep things under control. Avoid what needs to be avoided.
