After a long and hard day at the office, out and about or looking after your kids, it is important you learn how to relax and unwind - to let go of all the stress that has built up throughout the day and allow yourself to indulge. We have put together five great ways that help you to de-stress and relax - from listening to music to lighting a few candles - they are sure to help you forget all your troubles.

1) Listen to some music - listening to one of your favourite music tracks can be a great way to let go of everything that happened throughout the day. It would be adviseable however, that you choose tracks that are calming and relaxing. Listening to your favourite tune by Chase and Status is unlikely to put you in a relaxed state! Instead try some music without lyrics, maybe the type of thing you'd find in a yoga class, or used for meditation. It means your brain will have little to think about, and you can simply concentrate on thinking about nothing!

2) Take a bath - the heat from the water in bath will automatically make your muscles relax and means you will lose all of the stresses and strains that you carry on your shoulders every day. It also means that you can add some bubble bath and the smell and fragrance will also cause you to relax.

3) Essential oils - much like above, if you need to unwind you should smell some essential oils, either put a few drops in a bath, or put some on your pillow before you go to sleep. It has been said that lavender has particular calming effects and allows you to let go and de-stress. It is also suggested that lavender helps to clear your head and give you more clarity. There are hundreds of essential oils and usually they are easily available from local shops or online. Why not ad some to your christmas gifts list?

4) Read your favourite book - not only has it been proven that reading allows your mind to calm down, but there is also something comforting about reading your favourite book over again. It is the sense of control that you already know exactly what will happen next and you can be sure that it will turn out as you expect - unlike your day at the office!

5) Light some candles - bright lights can cause headaches, eye pain and all sorts of other stress related issues. So dim the lights and light some candles instead. The therapeutic effect of the flame is sure to have you feeling calm in no time, and the lower intensity of light means you won't cause any problems for your eyes.

So, if you have had a hard day at the office, or you just want to chill out and relax one Sunday afternoon, take a tip from us and either indulge in essential oils or read your favourite book to allow you to drift away to your happy place.
