About 10 to 20 percent of children who have Cerebral Palsy acquire the disorder after birth, while many more cases are caused by an incident that occurs during pregnancy or birth. Some cases of Cerebral Palsy have no identifiable cause but, now many can be given credit to prenatal conditions. A study at the University of Liverpool determined that many cause of Cerebral Palsy may be from a death of a twin very early on in the developing process. The issue with the twin dying early on can be from the twins sharing the same placenta and the circulating blood can be infected causing the alive twin to be damaged. Many other theories exist to explain cerebral palsy spastic diplegia. Children that acquire cerebral palsy later in childhood from influences unconnected to natal or birth trauma. Risk factors that improve the chances of a child having Cerebral Palsy from pregnancy are maternal diabetes or hyperthyroidism, high blood pressure while the mother has yet to deliver the child, poor nutrition to the fetus, maternal seizures, and premature delivery can greatly increase the chances of Cerebral Palsy. It is commonly known as the biggest creator of Cerebral Palsy and about 50% of infants born prematurely have the disease. When the baby is developing if it does not have enough oxygen it can not gain the needed amount to develop fully and that can result in Cerebral Palsy. Meningitis during the early months of a child being born can cause the disease. If a child has seizures the disease can become prevalent.
A very preventable measure you can take to reduce the chances of your baby having prenatal Cerebral Palsy is to not take illicit drugs, smoke, or drink while pregnant. If you abuse substance or do not take care of yourself while you are pregnant your baby can be born prematurely or weigh a lot less and that can effect the likeliness of it having Cerebral Palsy.
Long and complicated labor can make a child have Cerebral Palsy in unfortunate cases. If your baby got stuck in the birth canal the baby may receive the disease. The lack of oxygen is a common leader to the disease. If while in labor your water broke and you delivered more than 24 hours later your child may be at risk for Cerebral Palsy. Brain damage and a lack of oxygen are a very large factors in the development of cerebral palsy. While you are pregnant if you have a fever over one hundred degrees your child may be at risk for brain damage while developing. You should visit a doctor often while you are pregnant to make sure that you have not received any infections that could possibly lead to your child coming down with the disorder.
