Smoother and younger looking skin is sought out by many. There are seemingly endless options available to help improve the skin. So much so, that it can difficult or even overwhelming to decide which option is best for you.

Something that is really taking off are TCA Peels. A TCA or Trichloroacetic acid peel will 'burn' away layers of the skin, correcting skin discoloration or pigment problems, smoothing out surface wrinkles, and removing superficial blemishes. TCA Peels can be done on the face, neck or other body parts.

The acid is brushed onto the skin and left for anywhere from two to fifteen minutes, as determined by your skin professional. There may be a stinging sensation, at first, but this quickly subsides. The amount of time that the acid is left on the skin determines the depth of the peel. Previous to treatment, the skin may need to be prepared with Retin-A or Aplha Hyrdoxy Acid creams. These will remove surface dry skin, so the peel can get to the underlying skin. After a TCA peel treatment it is essential that a sun block be applied on daily basis as the skin will be very sensitive.

Repeat peels may be necessary to achieve the desired results. Also, annual or bi-annual touch up peels will be necessary to maintain the full effect. The best candidates for this type of peel are those with slightly darker complexions. However, you possible success with this peel can be discussed and determined by your skin professional.

With any peel there is the risk of side effects. There can be moderate discomfort, redness, irritation, and swelling. It is very important that all instructions given by your skin care professional are followed, to make sure the skin heals properly. In the days following the TCA Peel, the skin will get crusty and scab-like, take on a leather like appearance, and begin to flake and peel. This is normal, and as the dead skin comes off, new refreshed skin will be revealed.

It is best to avoid sun exposure as much as possible for about two weeks after a skin peel, to ensure there is no skin damage.

If you are considering TCA Peels, it is best to consult with several skin professionals, to determine what option is best for you.
