In the modern age there are a multitude of dental treatments to correct tooth ailments, including the ever popular Invisalign braces which have taken orthodontics to the next level. But now there are also other treatments to actually cover tooth imperfections, without the time it takes for braces like Invisalign to work their magic...

Due to the popularity of TV makeover shows, people have become far more self-conscious about their appearance and many consider having porcelain veneers.

Like any type of dental or cosmetic work, getting as much information as possible in advance about exactly what is involved, including the costs, can avoid problems later on.
Dental veneers are thin shells made of porcelain that are fitted directly on top of existing teeth and can hide a multitude of imperfections such as discoloured, uneven or chipped teeth.

In the past, as with cosmetic surgery, dental veneers were the preserve of celebrities like Tom Cruise, who is probably the best known Hollywood actor to have them done.
One advantage of veneers is the fact that they are very natural and can make teeth look extremely healthy.

A single veneer can be made to cover a broken tooth, or all of the front teeth can be veneered.

The process involves the dentist first preparing the teeth, which may involve removing some of the enamel, so that the veneers will bond more securely.

This is usually painless, but a local anaesthetic may be given. Afterwards, the dentist will take a mould of the teeth, so the veneers can be prepared.

Another visit to the dentist will be required to fit the veneers, and probably a follow up a week or so later to give the veneers a polish and check they are fitted to perfection!
The costs can vary greatly from hundreds to thousands of pounds, depending on the dental practice, the current condition of the teeth and whether a full-set of veneers is required.

But as they last for several years, it should be seen as a long-term investment; although it should be noted that like natural teeth, veneers can chip, so may need repairing.
