In recent years, tooth whitening has become an increasingly popular dental procedure. The vices of modern life - wine, coffee and smoking - can leave your teeth stained and discoloured, whilst the natural gleam of our teeth generally fades as we get older. If you find the thought of relinquishing your morning coffee and late night glass of red too awful to even contemplate, tooth whitening could be a viable option.
The process essentially lightens the natural colour of your teeth; putting a healthy and natural looking freshness back into your smile.
What teeth whitening systems are available?
There are a number of methods available, including the use of home kits. However, professional procedures in a dentistry office are the most effective - with professional bleaching the most familiar method - largely due to individualised needs and complexities in treatment. If you are to use home kits, always seek consultation with your dentist beforehand and use kits displaying the British Dental Health Foundation approved logo.
What does teeth whitening involve?
The actual process of professional bleaching consists of applying a high concentration of oxidising agent to the teeth. Beforehand, a layer of protective gel will be painted onto your gums to ensure the soft tissue is protected. Your dentist will then use a custom made ‘tray' to fit in your mouth - a little like a gum-shield - which simultaneously applies the whitening product to your teeth. The bleaching agent contains hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide which is broken down, allowing oxygen to get into the enamel of the teeth and thus lightening the colour.
The tray will be applied for about 20-30 minutes but will require more than one session and continuation of the treatment at home. Overall the procedure should be completed within three to four weeks, but results can last years.
Alternatively, ‘power' or ‘laser' whitening offers a substantially quicker method. This can be completed within an hour during one session and involves the application of a whitening gel and a laser/light being shone on your teeth, thus activating and speeding up the chemical reaction.
Again, prior consultation with your dentist will be required before treatment.
In terms of cost, prices do vary depending on the particular practice, but laser whitening is the more expensive option.
If you are interested in freshening up your smile, see your dentist for further details, advice and pricing.
