Shopping for toiletries and health products can be daunting these days, with every product claiming to be the best on the market. When you walk into the shop, you are now faced with a myriad of different products, all in bright, attractive packaging with slogans, offers and tips to lure you in; so how on earth do you choose which one to buy?

Too much to choose from!

When it comes to oral hygiene, it is best to ask your dentist for advice; nowadays there are so many different brands and specialist product that it can be very confusing. There are hundreds of different toothpastes on the market so choose the one that has suitable benefits for you; for example if you have sensitive teeth, you should choose toothpaste which has been specially developed to protect the enamel and reduce sensitivity; all the major brands have sensitive toothpastes and some also have whitening and additional benefits.

Most people still opt for a basic manual toothbrush, even though numerous scientific studies have shown that electric toothbrushes are much more effective at cleaning the teeth and removing bacteria; electric toothbrushes may be more expensive but they often outlast manual toothbrushes and will help to boost oral health and reduce the likelihood of oral health problems. Electric toothbrushes have really come down in price and are much more affordable than they used to be; if you are strapped for cash, battery operated toothbrushes are a good alternative, as they are cheaper but provide better cleaning power than traditional toothbrushes.

The forgotten art of flossing

Flossing is much more important than most people realise; daily flossing helps to remove trapped food particles and bacteria from hard to reach areas of the mouth, including the gum line and the gaps between the teeth. Dental floss is fine tape, which is passed through the gaps between the teeth and along the gum line; it is best to go for more expensive versions (which are still very reasonable) as they are more durable and will not get stuck between the teeth or break off mid-floss.

Rinse and repeat

Mouthwash is also beneficial for oral health and should be used on a daily basis, according to most dentists. Try to choose an alcohol-free mouthwash, as there have been some suggestions that alcohol can contribute to increased risk of health problems. There are many different flavours available and many brands have a range of mouthwashes aimed at children, which are milder.

Tried and tested

When shopping for oral hygiene products, it is usually beneficial to use the tried and tested brands but always ask your dentist for advice if you are struggling; they will ensure that you are using the best possible products for your individual situation. Oral hygiene products are widely available in pharmacies and supermarkets, as well as high street chemists and dental offices; often, large supermarkets and high street chain stores have great offers on so you can buy the best brands at affordable prices.
