Have you ever been taken aback by a set of startling blue eyes staring right at you, flashed a coy smile, got a return and been taken aback in a different way? Ever sparked up a conversation with someone you liked only to find when you got a little up close and personal their less than fresh breath was less than pleasant? A horrible smile suggests poor dental hygiene and to the opposite sex, and to the same sex for that matter, poor hygiene of any kind is an instant turn off.
If you asked anybody, male or female, what is the first thing that attracts them to a person; one of the most common answers would most certainly be their gorgeous smile. It's a winner every time; but unlike a naturally dazzling pair of eyes, a dazzling set of teeth take some care and attention, and with the hectic lifestyles that most of us lead today, it's probable that most of us are guilty of skipping the odd flossing here and there.
So what is good oral hygiene? Twice a day every day, morning and night is the basic rule; but how long is long enough to do the job properly? After a long hard day at the office the last thing we want to do before we climb in to bed is spend ages in the bathroom scouring around every corner of our mouth, and who can honestly be bothered to break out the dental floss five minutes before bed. It's tedious and I'm sure we're all guilty of it; without a little bit of extra effort though it is going to be difficult to uphold a smile that rivals Brad Pitt or Cheryl Cole.
A few minute of your time
It may seem like a pointless activity before bed, especially after a long day but it takes just a few minutes morning and night to keep your smile as eye catching as can be. A general guide for a healthy mouth is two minutes brushing morning and night, not forgetting to massage the gums and clean the tongue. Cleaning the tongue is extremely important because it removes all the dead skin cells, rotting food particles and general bacteria from the mouth. A good trick for cleaning the tongue well is to use mouthwash rather than toothpaste as it works much better than toothpaste. This should all be rounded off with a thorough flossing. Brushing does not clean between the teeth properly and so all the bits of food that have gotten stuck there during the day will linger and cause plaque build up. That little extra effort really will pay off and you'll be proud to flash your bright white teeth at the hot stranger across the dance floor on Saturday night.
Another result of poor oral hygiene is bad breath. We've all been there when the train is crammed and the man you end up awkwardly pressed up against just happens to have the worst breath ever in the history of bad breath. It's not something we would ever want our potential future husband or wife to think of us; in fact it's a dead cert that if they did, there would certainly be no sound of wedding bells in our future, only the sound of the door slamming shut on another non-starter of a relationship.
To keep your breath minty fresh is made easy these days. There is a whole aisle dedicated to mouthwash and breath freshening products in your local Boots; a flavour, colour and style for every occasion. Chewing gum after meals and snacks and drinking more water during the day are also great ways to prevent food lingering in all the crannies and keeps your breath wonderfully fresh at the same time. The big one though is cleaning your tongue. It's the bacteria on the tongue that is the main culprit for making your breath a little stale and if we don't remove the bacteria it will only fester there for longer breeding its germs and nasty smells. It's all very simple if we just change our bad habits and take more care of our mouths.
Up close and personal
Poor oral hygiene is down to pure laziness. It's hard to make yourself do something so religiously if you can't honestly see the difference you're making. What you have to remember though is that when you're getting a little up close and personal with that hot stranger and they don't want to run far away really fast from the stale smell of your breath or the yellow tinge of your smile; that extra couple of minutes you spent flossing morning and night will be all worthwhile. Who knows? Maybe you'll be hearing the sound of wedding bells sooner than you thought; and with all that extra effort you put in to your flossing, the wedding snaps are bound to be dazzling.
